Consumer Credit Reports - Credit Inquiries - Disclosures

Consumer credit reports should include disclosures of the inquiries made into your credit file. There are two types of credit inquiries: soft and hard inquiries.

Soft inquiries can be made by employers, landlords, and businesses you have established credit with. When you look at your credit report, this is also counted as a soft inquiry. Your credit score is not affected by these soft inquiries.

Hard inquiries are those made by businesses that you're applying credit for. These inquiries affect your credit score and usually bring it down a handful of points. Try to limit the number of hard inquiries. Too many hard inquiries may be seen as a sign of financial difficulty, and that you're looking to take on lots of credit.

The Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA) requires that all inquiries made must be legitimate and must have been authorized by the consumer. If you find through a credit report disclosure an unrecognized and unauthorized inquiry, you have the right to request the creditor to stop and remove your name from their inquiry list. You can ask them to disclose the written authorization they have to make such inquiries. If none can be provided, the inquiry should be removed from the credit report.
